Tribefit Online Personal Trainers Workshop - Why Controlling Lead / Client Generation is #1 Priority

Hey guys, Chris Lynton here from Tribefit.  And I wanted to talk to you today about the number one area that all trainers or most trainers go wrong in.  

And if you are having issues with your personal training business, if you are having difficulties getting clients.  If you're having difficulties earning what you'd like. And you're having difficulties, I guess having that time freedom that you would like to have as well.  Then it generally comes down to one, true problem.  

And I'd say 90% to 95% of trainers fall into this bucket.  And basically what this number one mistake, this number one area where a lot of personal trainers go wrong, is not having control over your lead generation and your client generation.  And let me explain what that means.  

A lot of face to face trainers when they first start personal training, or even ones that have been for 5 to 10 years.  If you'd have control, if you don't have the ability to actually create your own leads, your own targeted, hearty motivated leads.  If you don't have your own way to create, and control your new client generation.  Then as a result, you need to rely on someone else to generate it for you.  And this is one of the worst positions to be in.  And the reason for that is you have a reliance on someone else.  They control you.  They own you.  You have more reliance and more need for them, than they do for you. 

And I'll give one example.  A lot of trainers work in gyms, pay rents in gyms, and kind of march to the beat of the drum of the gym owner.  Even if the terms, the pricing, the hours, the free sessions you have to give away.  Even they if they not in a good format, they're not set up correctly, and a lot of personal trainers take on crummy locations paying way too much for rent.  Having to give away all of these free sessions, because they don't have control over generating their own leads.  And they don't have control over generating their own clients.  

And they have to go into these gyms, go into these studios, work at these big box gyms or whatever because that's the only way that they can try and get leads.  It's the only way they can try and get clients by, giving away free sessions to any new member that comes to the gym and hope that client that's taking that free session might think that your services were good, think the training was good, and might want to take you up and become a client.  But unfortunately, these days, gyms, big box gyms.  A lot of big box gyms are using this as soon as members sign up, giving away one, two, three free sessions.  They're using that as a marketing ploy for themselves, to get people into the gym.  

And unfortunately, you get a lot of people that are just seeing these sessions as free sessions.  They're kind of tight kickers.  And they're not potentially looking to continue on after that or even worse, they don't see your value when you're training with then because it was free.  They didn't really want it in the first place, and it was kinda just something chucked in at them to get them into the gym.  

Your gym owner doesn't care, they don't really mind that you have to give these free sessions.  And they are only doing it to get more people into their gym.  They're not actually trying to do it to allow you to get leads and allow you to get clients.  But as a result, unfortunately, you have to do these sessions because you have no other way to create your own leads.  You no other way to create your own clients.  And I see this time and time again.  And it is a trap.  It is a bit of a merry-go-round.  

And as a result, you do all of these free sessions.  You spend too much time with these clients that don't really see your value or don't really want to do the personal training sessions in the first place.  And definitely don't want to continue thereafter.  But you're doing it in hope to trying to get a client.  You have to do what the gym owner, or the studio owner tells you because you are reliant on them handing you names, handing you numbers, handing you people on kind of a silver platter for you to try and get clients and leads.  

As soon as you take control over generating your own leads and generating your own clients.  As soon as you have control over that, you actually have control over your business.  And I like to say to a lot of personal trainers, yes you might be a business owner, you might own your own business.  You might have all the stress and all the issues and the accounting and the business setups of being a business owner.  But if you can't generate your own leads and you can't generate your own clients, you actually have a job in disguise.  It's because you have a boss.  You have someone that you are more reliant on them, then they are reliant on you.  And that is all because you've gone down this one trap, this one space of not being able to generate your own leads or generate your own clients.  


As soon as you take control of that, you get back control of your time, your calendar, your life.  If you need to, you can generate three, four, five, ten new clients at any given time that you want.  You can take time off because you know as soon as you come back, you can get yourself leads and clients just like that.  Rather than thinking, oh if I take time off, I'll go back to the back of the list.  And I won't be get these free sessions handed out to me time and time again.  So the one thing that you need to think about, all personal trainers listen to this.  

Whether you're an online personal trainer, whether you're a face to face personal trainer, if you do not control your lead generation, and your client generation, then you actually have a job in disguise.  You've got all the stress, all the issues, all of the disadvantages of being a business owner but you don't have the positives that come with it as well.  You don't have the control, the freedom, you don't have the ability, to scale your earnings in a any given time that you want to. 

 So the first and foremost thing you need to do as a business owner, is know and learn how to generate leads.  And know and learn how to turn those leads into hard paying clients whenever you need.  As soon as you have control of that, you'll much prefer your business.  You become a business owner rather than having a job in disguise.  And you'll start to see all the benefits and the positives of being in that space.  And you'll much rather prefer your life, your business life, and where you're going.  So hopefully that helps.  If you currently are reliant on someone else to generate your leads and clients, then what you need to do over this given month is spend some time, spend some energy any spare time you have.  Learn about how to generate leads.  

Learn how to generate clients.  And this can be through, free client getting strategies, it can be through paid in advertising client getting strategies.  Depending on which way you want to go.  As soon as you understand how to do that, then you'll much prefer what you're doing in the moment.  You'll get the freedom, you'll get the financial reward and impact that you want as well.  And you'll start to enjoy the journey a lot more.  So hopefully that helps.  Make sure you spend time and energy learning how to do those two things, the lead generation, the client generation.  And like I said, your business will completely change.
